This work permit allows the partners/spouses of the individuals living or working in Canada to have the ability to work legally in Canada during the study/work period of the main applicant. This work permit is usually granted for a period of 2 years and it is an open work permit.
This gives an excellent opportunity to the spouse or partner to gain some valuable Canadian work experience and potentially qualify to apply for permanent residency on their own in the future. Most importantly, this allows families to stay together and manage the household finances.
REQUIREMENTS
The Spousal Work Permit is very straight forward, if the family member accompanies someone who is studying in Canada, the student:
- Must have a valid study permit.
- Must be enrolled as a full-time student.
- Must be studying at an eligible Post-Secondary Institution (PSI).
- Must be medically acceptable.
- Must have a clean criminal record.
If the family member accompanies someone who on a Work Permit in Canada, the foreign worker:
- Must have a valid work permit of at least 6-months.
- Must be employed in a high-level skilled job as per the government regulations.
